Why Spotify Needs a ‘Favourites’ Feature

I have been thinking of an idea that could potentially benefit Spotify and expand its growth & exposure. It is just a simple feature that I believe a lot of its users would appreciate as music lovers.

Spotify should introduce top five lists that you are able to share with your friends as well as be able to meet other users with similar tastes as you.

Music lovers have a profound affection for their taste in artists and their repertoire. Think of your favourite bands/artists. When they put out a new song or album that you have been playing on repeat for the last hour, you fall in love with it and you want to share it with everyone you know – or at least everyone you know that has similar musical taste as you do.

Music lovers are devoted and will fight for their favourite bands/artists whether it is in a real life discussion or an argument on the YouTube comments of the particular song. How many times have you scrolled through comments of a song and see comments that turn from discussion into arguments? People stand by their favourite artists/bands as if they are family.

It is because of this that I believe Spotify should allow you to have some sort of favourite list – and for it to be shareable as a link, as well as not hidden away somewhere within your profile (preferably it should have its own tab).

I created a quick little mock up of what I would like to see. Top 5 songs, albums, and artists all on one page with no other fluff. If my friend John has similar taste in music to me, and is always recommending me exceptional music and allows me to discover new music that becomes a staple in my playlist, then I’d love to see what has been on repeat for him lately by just visiting a link.

Spotifyve

(a quick mock up of my vision titled ‘Spotifyve’). Obviously the songs/albums would be different selections. I feel like this feature would fit well within the ‘Your Music’ section on the left. Replacing the ‘Artists’ tab was unintentional.)

Do I believe that people would take the time to choose their top five favourite songs/artists/bands? Absolutely. Like I stated earlier in this post, people are proud of their selections in music, just as many other of their subjective decisions in life. They should be able to put it all on display for the world to see.

I definitely love seeing custom playlists from friends and even some of my favourite bands to see what influences them. But at the same time if I just want to quickly check what someone has been listening to lately non-stop, then I feel that a feature like this would be very beneficial.

By adding a feature like this, Spotify allows its users to create bonds over their musical tastes and could even lead to discussions and new friendships. It could influence others to download Spotify because they saw a friend’s top five list and now they want to showcase their own.

Music is such a strong powerful force that brings people together. I believe that Spotify should be embracing that as much as they can.
